Per the 2020 Solar Jobs Census, operations and maintenance work represented roughly 7% of solar industry jobs, versus about 67% in installation and project development — a workforce overwhelmingly built and trained for construction, not for the diagnostic service work an aging installed base increasingly requires. That imbalance hasn't reversed as fast as the installed base has aged.

Solar panels themselves are built for a 25+ year expected lifespan — but the electronics keeping them functional, especially inverters, have meaningfully shorter service lives and predictable failure patterns as they age. A technician entering O&M work now is stepping into a genuinely underbuilt specialty relative to the scale of the installed base it will need to service over the coming decade, not a crowded, mature job market.
